Virginia Gail Toy 教授任教于德国美因茨大学，同时兼任新西兰奥塔哥大学荣誉教授。研究方向涉及断裂、断层与剪切带的变形力学机制，特别是流体-岩石相互作用及其在显微构造尺度上的表现；

流体注入诱发地震、地热能开发、碳封存及天然氢气生成等与气候保护相关的地下资源利用问题；断层岩石的电学特性与地球物理成像、古地震学及超基性岩的变形化学演化。

曾担任国际大陆科学钻探计划（ICDP）科学咨询组成员、联合国教科文组织国际地球科学计划科学委员会委员、《Journal of Structural Geology》编辑等职务，是国际上构造地质与断裂力学领域的著名专家。在《Nature》、《Science》、《Geology》、《Journal of Geophysical Research》、《Journal of Structural Geology》等期刊发表论文几十篇。
