理悦CEMA•知与行系列研讨会：“Domestic Transportation Infrastructure and Gains from Trade in The Vertical Linkages”

This study examines how investments in domestic transportation infrastructure contribute to gains from trade. Using a two-country Melitz-style model that accounts for both international and domestic iceberg transportation costs in the trade of intermediate goods, we demonstrate that reducing domestic transportation costs through infrastructure improvements enhances trade gains for both domestic and foreign firms via vertical linkages. We empirically test these predictions using panel data on Chinese manufacturing firms from 2000 to 2007. After addressing endogeneity with a control function approach, we find that market access to upstream suppliers positively influences the Domestic Value-Added Ratio of exporting firms in the home country, with market access explaining 32.83% of its interquartile variation. Additionally, increased market access boosts the exporters’value-added and revenue. Furthermore, market access to downstream firms enhances the value-added, profit, and revenue of upstream producers in the home country.
