- We develop a model featuring heterogeneous workers and firms, where firms operate as hierarchies of differentiated positions. Labor markets clear via a one-to-many sorting mechanism, with firms deciding both the worker number of each position and the worker types assigned to those positions. This process shapes (1) the within-firm structure of positions, (2) the wage distribution among workers, and (3) the productivity distribution across firms. We study business cycles in the presence of a market efficiency shock, which disproportionately affects better firms. The model aligns with recent empirical findings on the cyclical behavior of wage and productivity distributions.
