- I will describe the effects of charge-regulated acid/base equilibria on the swelling of polyelectrolyte gels by considering a combination of the Poisson−Boltzmann theory and a two-site charge-regulation model based on the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. By exploring the volume change as a function of salt concentration for both nanogels and microgels, it appears that at certain conditions the gel volume exhibits a discontinuous swelling transition, driven exclusively by the charge-regulation mechanism and characterized by a closed-loop phase diagram. These predictions can be tested experimentally for polypeptide gels.

Rudolf Podgornik是中国科学院大学物理学院的讲座教授, 国家特聘外国专家。他专注于软物质物理、高分子物理和生物物理,研究领域包括带电流体、Lifshitz色散相互作用理论、Casimir效应、生物膜、高分子和聚电解质(如DNA、RNA)的物理学以及病毒物理学。他撰写了400多篇科研论文,被引用12000多次,并编辑了两本专著,为全球学术做出了杰出贡献。
