报告介绍:
Advances in satellite geodesy now allow us to observe continental deformation at very high spatial resolution, with ever-improving accuracy. But what do these data tell us about the fundamental processes shaping our continents, particularly in convergent belts such as the Alpine-Himalayan Belt? And what are the implications for living with seismic hazard in deforming belts? I will present the results of a 10-year effort by a large team in COMET to map deformation across the entire Alpine-Himalayan Belt, combining data from Sentinel-1 InSAR and GNSS. While vertical deformation is dominated by non-tectonic processes, horizontal velocities reveal key characteristics of continental deformation: (1) focused strain on large fault systems; (2) diffuse deformation away from major fault systems; (3) areas resistant to deformation; (4) large earthquakes influencing deformation for several decades. Successful models must incorporate spatial variations in strength and allow for focused deformation on large faults. I will also discuss how present-day strain rates relate to earthquakes and how we can better use geodesy to improve seismic hazard assessment. I will conclude by offering my perspective on future directions for the field.
